1879 Charles Darwin at eighty years old

1879 Photograph by Elliot and Fry. According to Gene Kritsky, who maintains an archive of Darwin photographs, this was from a session at his home, Down House, in 1879. After Darwins death in 1882 this version was sold mounted by Elliot and Fry in memoriam, the photo noted as circa 1880. Darwin was famously not keen on having his photograph taken by strangers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Charles Darwin at the remarkable age of eighty. Taken in 1879 by renowned photographers Elliot and Fry, this image provides a rare glimpse into the private life of one of history's most influential figures. Gene Kritsky, curator of an extensive collection dedicated to Darwin's photographs, confirms that this particular shot was taken during a session at Down House, his beloved home. Despite his aversion to being photographed by strangers, Darwin allowed himself to be immortalized in this poignant portrait. The sepia tones lend a timeless quality to the image, emphasizing both his wisdom and the weight of his groundbreaking theories on evolution. As we gaze upon this commemorative photograph today, it serves as a powerful reminder of Darwin's enduring legacy. His revolutionary ideas continue to shape our understanding of biology and challenge conventional beliefs about human existence. Paul D. Stewart has skillfully captured not just an old man nearing the end of his journey but also a symbol for progress and scientific inquiry. This print is more than just an artistic representation; it encapsulates the spirit and determination that drove Charles Darwin throughout his illustrious career.
