Roger Bacon, English philosopher

Roger Bacon, (c.1214-1292) English philosopher and alchemist. Bacon studied at Oxford and in Paris, and joined the Franciscan Order (c.1247) as a monk. Bacon had bold ideas, was self-confident and his works were suppressed when he was imprisoned for 15 years. Bacon was neither an experimentalist nor a mathematician but believed in these approaches for science. He foresaw man controlling nature; made predictions (however imprecise) on mechanical land transport, air and undersea transport; first suggested that man could circumnavigate the earth and mentioned gunpowder. Bacon foreshadowed Paracelsus when he claimed that alchemy was essential to medicine. This engraving comes from Symbola aureae by Michael Maier, published at Frankfurt in

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enigmatic figure of Roger Bacon, an influential English philosopher and alchemist from the 13th century. Captured in a striking engraving by Michael Maier, this image transports us back to a time when bold ideas were met with suppression and imprisonment. Bacon's intellectual journey began at Oxford and Paris, where he delved into the realms of science and philosophy. Joining the Franciscan Order as a monk in 1247, Bacon possessed an unwavering self-confidence that fueled his pursuit of knowledge. Although not an experimentalist or mathematician himself, he firmly believed in these approaches for advancing scientific understanding. What sets Bacon apart is his visionary thinking. He foresaw humanity's ability to control nature long before it became reality. His predictions on mechanical land transport, air travel, undersea exploration, and even circumnavigating the Earth were revolutionary for his time – albeit imprecise. In addition to his scientific pursuits, Bacon recognized the importance of alchemy in medicine – a belief that foreshadowed Paracelsus' later contributions to medical science. This mesmerizing engraving serves as a testament to Bacon's enduring legacy as both a philosopher and alchemist. It invites us to contemplate how one man's ideas can shape our understanding of the world around us. Todd-White Art Photography has masterfully captured this historical moment through their lens, allowing us to appreciate Bacon's profound impact on human thought centuries later.
