Portrait of German chemist Daniel Sennert

Portrait of Daniel Sennert (1572-1637) at the age of 55 from an engraving by M. Merian (1627). Sennert was Professor of Medicine at Wittenberg from 1602. His work Institutionum medicinae, published in 1611 was one of the most frequently reprinted medical texts of the 17th century. He is one of the first chemists to have adopted an atomic view of matter. He wrote " it is an art to resolve natural compound bodies into their principles of which they are made, and to make the pure and strong for medicines, or to perfect or change metals"

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed German chemist, Daniel Sennert, at the age of 55. The portrait, engraved by M. Merian in 1627, beautifully captures the essence of this pioneering figure in the field of chemistry. Sennert's remarkable contributions to science and medicine are truly commendable. As a Professor of Medicine at Wittenberg since 1602, he left an indelible mark on academia and research during the 16th and 17th centuries. His groundbreaking work titled "Institutionum medicinae" published in 1611, became one of the most widely reprinted medical texts of its time. What sets Sennert apart is his early adoption of an atomic view of matter—an idea that was revolutionary for his era. He believed that it was an art to break down complex natural compounds into their fundamental elements and then refine them for medicinal purposes or even transform metals altogether. This portrait not only immortalizes Sennert but also serves as a reminder of his immense contributions to chemical medicine and our understanding of atomic theory. It symbolizes his dedication to unraveling nature's mysteries through meticulous experimentation and analysis. As we admire this image from Science Photo Library, let us celebrate Daniel Sennert as a true pioneer—a visionary whose legacy continues to inspire scientists today.
