Polystyrene floating, image 1 of 2

Polystyrene floating on water. Image 1 of 2. Polystyrene floats as its density (mass in a given volume) is less than that of water. The amount of polystyrene below the water line has a volume equal to the volume of water with a mass equal to that of the entire polystyrene block. Objects with the exact same density as water displace the same volume. If they are denser, the volume of water displaced is greater than the objects volume, and it sinks. Image A350/197 shows the block pushed under the waters surface, showing it displacing a volume of water equal to its volume. Note the water level at just over 700 millilitres here

14"x12" (38x32cm) Modern Frame

Discover the beauty of science with our Media Storehouse Framed Prints featuring this captivating image from Science Photo Library. Witness the fascinating phenomenon of polystyrene effortlessly floating on the water's surface in "Polystyrene Floating, Image 1 of 2." This visually striking print showcases the unique interaction between materials, highlighting the principle that the density of polystyrene is less than that of water. Elevate your home or office décor with this thought-provoking and visually engaging piece, perfect for science enthusiasts and anyone who appreciates the wonders of our world.

Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 archival quality photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (38x32cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: To minimise original artwork cropping, for optimum layout, and to ensure print is secure, the visible print may be marginally smaller

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the fascinating phenomenon of polystyrene floating on water. In this first image of a series, we witness the remarkable buoyancy of polystyrene due to its lower density compared to that of water. The volume of polystyrene below the water line is equivalent to the volume of water displaced by the entire block's mass. The concept illustrated here is based on Archimedes' principle, which states that objects with identical density as water displace an equal volume. However, if an object is denser than water, it will displace a greater volume and sink instead. Image A350/197 showcases an intriguing demonstration where the polystyrene block has been pushed beneath the surface, revealing how it displaces precisely its own volume in water. Notably, observe the precise measurement indicated at just over 700 milliliters in this photograph. This educational snapshot was taken in a school laboratory during a physical experiment aimed at demonstrating principles related to density and buoyancy. It serves as a powerful visual aid for physics lessons or discussions about physical effects and measurements using liquid mediums.
