Phrenology

Phrenology. Computer artwork of the side of a head, with the skull divided into numbered regions, consistent with the nineteenth century pseudoscientific practice of phrenology. This theory was based around the belief that the brain was divided into regions which controlled different personality traits. According to someones character, different parts would be different sizes. The size of these parts would impact upon the shape of the skull and so consequently it was possible to assess someones personality by feeling bumps on their skull

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Phrenology" takes us back to the nineteenth century, where pseudoscience and curious beliefs intertwined. The computer artwork presents a side view of a human head, meticulously divided into numbered regions on the skull. This division reflects the practice of phrenology, an intriguing yet debunked theory that claimed different personality traits were controlled by specific brain regions. According to this controversial belief, one's character could be assessed by examining the size and shape of these various parts. By feeling bumps on an individual's skull, phrenologists purportedly gained insight into their unique disposition. As we gaze at this historical illustration, we are reminded of both the fascination and skepticism surrounding phrenology. The image serves as a reminder of how medicine has evolved over time; shedding light on practices once considered legitimate but now regarded as quackery or charlatanism. It invites contemplation about our own era's scientific advancements and encourages us to question prevailing theories with open minds. Science Photo Library expertly captures this significant moment in medical history through their single computer artwork. While not mentioning any commercial use for this photo print, it sparks curiosity within viewers who seek knowledge about past misconceptions while appreciating how far science has come in understanding the complexities of human nature.
