Meteorological measuring station

Stevenson screen containing thermometers and other meteorological measuring and recording devices. The screen is designed to protect the thermometers from the effects of direct radiation and rainfall (precipitation), whilst allowing the free movement of air through the screen. The screens also ensure that conditions at different weather stations are as nearly standardised as possible, allowing a true comparison to be made between temperatures measured at different locations. The thermometers seen here, which are very sensitive to variations, are a minimum-maximum set of thermometers (horizontal) and a humidity thermometer (vertical, centre). The devices at either side are recorders

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases a meteorological measuring station, specifically a Stevenson screen. The purpose of this structure is to safeguard the thermometers and other meteorological measuring and recording devices from direct radiation and precipitation, while still allowing the free flow of air through its design. These screens play a crucial role in standardizing conditions across various weather stations, enabling accurate comparisons between temperature measurements taken at different locations. In this image, we can observe two types of highly sensitive thermometers: a minimum-maximum set (positioned horizontally) and a humidity thermometer (placed vertically at the center). These instruments are essential for capturing even the slightest variations in temperature. Flanking either side of the thermometers are recorders that dutifully document all collected data. This amalgamation of technology, measurement tools, and environmental monitoring equipment creates an optimal environment for precise meteorological observations. The significance of these meticulously designed screens lies not only in their ability to protect delicate instruments but also in their contribution to advancing our understanding of weather patterns. As captured by Science Photo Library's lens, this photograph encapsulates the essence of scientific progress within the field of meteorology - where cutting-edge technology meets standardized measurements to unravel nature's atmospheric mysteries.
