Framed Print of Malaria infection, artwork

Malaria infection. Computer artwork of a macrophage white blood cell (right) extending pseudopodia towards a red blood cell (left) infected with the Plasmodium fulciparum malaria parasite. A normal red blood cell is at centre. The cell is infected with the gametocyte (sexual reproductive) stage of the parasites life cycle. This stage is taken up by a mosquito when it feeds on a human. The gametocytes develop into male and female gametes in the mosquitos gut and fuse to form a zygote. This produces an ookinete that burrows through the gut lining and becomes an oocyst, which produces around 1000 sporozites. These move to the mosquitos salivary glands, where they are ready to infect the next human the mosquito bites.
