Image of the green flash effect

The green flash. Time-lapse photograph of the green flash, an elusive effect visible at sunset for a few seconds when the last portion of the solar disc goes beneath the horizon. The green flash is caused by the atmospheric refraction of the sunlight. The refraction is larger for green and blue light than for red light and this means that the image of the Sun viewed in green light will appear to be slightly higher above the horizon than the image in red. When the upper part of the red image approaches the horizon the green flash may be seen as a sudden change in colour from yellow (bottom image) to green. Sometimes a final violet-blue flash is also seen

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the elusive green flash effect, a mesmerizing phenomenon that occurs for just a few seconds during sunset. As the last portion of the solar disc dips beneath the horizon, an enchanting transformation takes place. The green flash is brought about by atmospheric refraction of sunlight, with greater refraction occurring for green and blue light compared to red light. In this stunning time-lapse photograph, we witness nature's magic at play. The image showcases how the Sun viewed in green light appears slightly higher above the horizon than its red counterpart. As the upper part of the red image approaches the horizon, a sudden change in color from yellow to vibrant green can be observed - this is when one may catch sight of the elusive green flash. But there's more to behold! Occasionally, as if bidding farewell with a final burst of beauty, a violet-blue flash graces our eyes before darkness settles in completely. This breathtaking display reminds us of Earth's intricate interplay between light and atmosphere. Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this extraordinary moment in time through their lens. With its rich landscape backdrop and impeccable timing, this print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and scientific marvel. Let it transport you to that fleeting instant when nature reveals its hidden wonders at sunset's edge.
