Hollow-face illusion, artwork

Hollow-face illusion, computer artwork. This is an optical illusion where the perception of a concave (hollow) mask of a face appears as a normal convex (protruding) face. This is because the brain has a strong bias for seeing faces as convex, which counteracts competing depth perception information, such as highlights and shadows. This oblique view shows the structures responsible for the optical illusion. To view the optical illusion, see image T478/503

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the mesmerizing Hollow-face illusion, a computer artwork that plays tricks on our perception. At first glance, what appears to be a normal convex face is actually a concave mask cleverly designed to deceive our brains. The human mind has an innate tendency to interpret faces as protruding, which creates an intriguing optical illusion. In this oblique view of the artwork, we can observe the intricate structures responsible for this mind-bending effect. The artist skillfully manipulates depth perception cues such as highlights and shadows to challenge our visual understanding. As we gaze upon this illusory creation, it becomes evident how easily our vision can be manipulated by subtle shifts in perspective. The hollow face illusion not only reveals the fascinating interplay between psychology and neuroscience but also serves as a reminder of the ambiguity inherent in visual perception. This thought-provoking piece invites us into a world where reality and trickery coexist harmoniously, leaving us questioning what we truly see. As we delve into this artistic exploration of illusions and deception, let us appreciate the ingenuity behind this masterpiece while contemplating the power of our own minds in shaping our perceptions.
