Draco and Ursa Minor constellations

Draco and Ursa Minor constellations. Illustrated card from a 19th century astronomical teaching aid called Uranias Mirror, after the Greek muse of astronomy. There are 32 cards in total. The cards are pierced with holes corresponding to the brightest stars so the pattern of the constellations can be seen when held up to the light. The cards were published in London, England, and it is thought they date from around 1825. This card shows the constellations Draco (the dragon), and Ursa Minor (the little bear). For all 32 cards, see V700/172-203

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of astronomical history. Taken from Uranias Mirror, an educational aid dating back to the 19th century, this illustrated card depicts two iconic constellations: Draco and Ursa Minor. Crafted in London, England around 1825, these cards were ingeniously designed with pierced holes corresponding to the brightest stars. When held up to light, these holes reveal the intricate patterns of the constellations. Draco, known as "the dragon" slithers across the night sky with its serpentine form. Its mythical allure has fascinated humans for centuries and is beautifully captured in this artwork. Adjacent to Draco lies Ursa Minor, or "the little bear" which holds great significance in ancient Greek mythology. These cards not only serve as a visual representation of celestial wonders but also offer an invaluable tool for teaching astronomy and astrology. With their historical charm and educational value, they provide a glimpse into both scientific progress and artistic expression during the 1800s. As we admire this image today, we are reminded of our enduring fascination with the stars above us and how humanity's quest for knowledge has shaped our understanding of the universe throughout history.
