Gustavus Brander (1720-1787), British naturalist. Brander, from a Swedish family, was a trustee of the British Museum from 1761. He was also a Director of the Bank of England (1761 to 1779) and Fellow of the Royal Society (1754). He is holding the type specimen of the sea snail Strombus amplus (later: Hippochrenes amplus). The writing on the shell (Foss. Hant. Fig. 76) refers to Branders book Fossilia Hantoniensia collecta, et in Museo Britannico deposita (1766). At lower left are ancient coins, with fossils found by Brander in cliffs along the coast of Hampshire. This portrait, by Nathaniel Dance (1735-1811), dates from the 1770s. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees!
