Framed Print : Galen, Greek physician, AD 130-200
Framed Photos from Science Photo Library
Galen, Greek physician, AD 130-200
Portrait of Galen, a Greek physician born in AD 130 and died in Ad 200. The portrait is from an unnamed book by Ambroise Pare, a French surgeon of the 16th century. After Galens death his body of work became medical authority among Europeans until his views on anatomy were overthrown by Vesalius (16th century) and those on physiology by Harvey (17th century). Galens anatomical assumptions were based on animals - human dissection having fallen into disrepute - which as it later proved, were not always applicable to humans. He was the first to use the pulse as a diagnostic aid and to describe the flow of urine through the ureters to the bladder

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Galen, a prominent Greek physician who lived from AD 130 to 200. The portrait, found in an unidentified book by Ambroise Paré, a renowned French surgeon of the 16th century, captures the essence of this influential figure. Galen's medical teachings became widely accepted among Europeans after his passing until they were eventually challenged by Vesalius and Harvey in later centuries. Galen's groundbreaking anatomical assumptions were primarily based on animal dissections since human dissection had fallen out of favor during his time. However, as history unfolded, it was revealed that these assumptions did not always apply accurately to humans. Nonetheless, Galen made significant contributions to medicine and left an indelible mark on the field. One of his notable achievements was being the first to utilize pulse as a diagnostic tool. Additionally, he provided detailed descriptions regarding the flow of urine through the ureters into the bladder – knowledge that greatly advanced our understanding of physiology. This remarkable print serves as a tribute to Galen's legacy as both a physician and anatomist. It reminds us how scientific progress is built upon previous discoveries while also acknowledging that new breakthroughs can challenge established beliefs. Through this image captured by Science Photo Library, we are invited to reflect on Galen's lasting impact on medical history and appreciate his invaluable contributions to our understanding of human anatomy and physiology.
