Framed Print of TEM of transverse section through blood capillary

False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a transverse section through a blood capillary, showing a single red blood cell in centre. A red blood cell is usually biconcave in shape, but may become distorted to enter small capillaries, which range in diameter from 3-10 micrometres. Capillary linings are made up exclusively of endothelial cells; individual cells are arranged longitudinally to the axis of the vessel. The nucleus of an endothelial cell appears at top of the sectioned capillary. At bottom right of image is a pericyte, an elongated cell of uncertain function. Magnification: x3, 500 at 6x7cm size. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass).
