Framed Prints From Science Photo Library
Framed Print of SEM of caterpillars hatching from eggs
Fourth of 5 false-colour scanning electron micro- graphs of caterpillars hatching from the eggs of the large white butterfly, Pieris brassicae. The micrograph shows a newly emerged caterpillar amongst eggs on the undersurface of a nasturtium leaf. The eggs are laid in large groups on the leaves of crops such as cabbage and broccoli. The caterpillars (larvae) hatch in September; they winter as pupae and emerge as butterflies in May. The young larvae feed on the cuticle of the leaf until after the first moult, when the diet expands to the whole leaf. Their voracious appetite can defoliate a crop. Magnification: x25 at 6x4.5cm size. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 3.36, page 63.
