Framed Print of Early Devonian landscape, artwork C016 / 5348

Early Devonian landscape. Artwork of early vascular plants (Rhynia) and larger fungal or lichen-like organisms (Prototaxites) growing on land during the Early Devonian period (420 to 395 million years ago). The Sun is low in the sky above a mountain range. The Rhynia plants are small, as most vascular plants of this era were less than about 60 centimetres high. In contrast, the Prototaxites trunks rise to a height of 8 metres. Large terrestrial animals had not yet appeared, and these plants were among the first to evolve. For this scene without Prototaxites, see C016/5347. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © RICHARD BIZLEY/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
