Centipede, SEM

Garden centipede. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head and upper body of a garden centipede (Lithobius sp.). A centipedes body is divided into segments, each containing a pair of legs. The number of segments varies from twelve to over one hundred. The legs on the first trunk segment (centre left) terminate in claws that contain poison glands. The centipede uses these claws to seize and kill its prey. Also seen (one running from centre to far right) are the centipedes antennae. Lithobius centipedes are ground-dwelling hunters. They are blind and so hunt by touch with their antennae. Magnification: x7 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a garden centipede, captured through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals the head and upper body of this fascinating creature, belonging to the Lithobius species. The segmented structure of the centipede's body is clearly visible in this print, with each segment housing a pair of legs. It is intriguing to note that these creatures can have anywhere from twelve to over one hundred segments. However, what truly catches the eye are the legs on the first trunk segment which terminate in sharp claws containing poison glands. These lethal appendages serve as weapons for seizing and killing prey. Additionally, we can observe the centipede's delicate antennae extending from its head towards various directions within the frame. These sensory organs play a crucial role in guiding their blind navigation across their ground-dwelling habitat. The vibrant colors used in this SEM photograph further enhance our appreciation for nature's remarkable diversity and beauty. With a magnification level of x7 at 6x7cm size, every tiny detail becomes vividly apparent. This stunning print serves as an awe-inspiring reminder of how even seemingly small organisms possess extraordinary adaptations for survival and hunting strategies that continue to fascinate scientists and nature enthusiasts alike.
