VIEW OF MORNING LIGHT ON THE JIN SHAN SECTION OF THE GREAT WALL ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF BEIJING

A view of morning light on the Jin Shan section of the Great Wall on the
outskirts of Beijing August 12, 2003. Chinas first regulation to protect
the Great Wall came into effect on August 1, banning tourists from exploring
undeveloped sections of it. The ancient wall, which was first built in the
Qin dynasty (221-206 bc) and rebuilt in the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), has
come under threat from the large number of tourists and hikers who visit it
each year. NO RIGHTS CLEARANCES OR PERMISSIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR THIS IMAGE REUTERS/Guang Niu

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the ethereal beauty of the Jin Shan section of the Great Wall on the outskirts of Beijing, illuminated by the soft morning light. Taken on August 12,2003, it showcases a breathtaking view that transports viewers to ancient China. The image holds historical significance as it was captured shortly after China's first regulation to protect the Great Wall came into effect. Implemented on August 1st of that year, this regulation aimed to preserve and safeguard this iconic structure by prohibiting tourists from exploring undeveloped sections. The need for such measures arose due to concerns over potential damage caused by the large number of visitors who flocked to experience its grandeur each year. Built during two significant dynasties - Qin (221-206 BC) and Ming (1368-1644), this architectural marvel has stood tall through centuries, symbolizing China's rich history and cultural heritage. However, with increasing footfall and hikers traversing its length, preserving its integrity became paramount. In this photograph taken by Guang Niu for Reuters Images, one can appreciate not only the stunning landscape but also reflect upon humanity's responsibility towards protecting our world heritage sites. As we admire this mesmerizing vista bathed in morning light, may it serve as a reminder to cherish and respect these treasures from our past for generations yet unborn.
