EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a glimpse into the past, showcasing the proposed extension to the refreshment room at West Croydon Station on the down side. Dating back to February 21st, 1900, this drawing numbered as 4285 provides an intriguing insight into the architectural plans of that era. The L. B. & S. C. R. , or London Brighton and South Coast Railway, envisioned expanding their refreshment facilities in this bustling station. The image transports us to a time when train travel was not only about reaching destinations but also about experiencing comfort and hospitality along the way. This proposed extension aimed to enhance passengers' journeys by providing them with an inviting space for relaxation and nourishment. Although we cannot see how this project ultimately materialized or if it even came to fruition, this photograph allows us to appreciate the meticulous planning and attention given to railway infrastructure over a century ago. It serves as a reminder of how transportation hubs have evolved throughout history while highlighting the importance placed on customer satisfaction. Preserved by Network Rail, this print offers both nostalgia for railway enthusiasts and curiosity for those interested in historical architecture. It stands as a testament to our collective fascination with preserving fragments of our past and understanding how they shape our present-day experiences within these spaces.
