EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to 1937, when the Great Western Railway (GWR) sought to entice travelers to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Wales. The poster, skillfully crafted by Sir Herbert Alker Tripp, showcases a mesmerizing view of Cader Idris and Afon Mawddach. Sir Herbert Alker Tripp was not only an accomplished artist but also had a distinguished career with New Scotland Yard. In his spare time and after retirement, he dedicated himself to painting and designing posters for GWR and Southern Railway (SR). His talent was widely recognized, leading him to be knighted in 1945. The image itself is nothing short of enchanting. Towering mountains adorned with lush greenery create a majestic backdrop against which the tranquil waters of Afon Mawddach flow gracefully. The scene is completed by a flock of sheep grazing peacefully in the foreground, adding a touch of serenity and rural charm. Transporting us back in time, this print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a historical artifact. It reminds us of the allure that rail travel held during this era, inviting viewers to embark on their own adventure through Wales' picturesque landscapes. Displayed proudly at the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this remarkable piece captures the essence of Wales' natural beauty while paying homage to Sir Herbert Alker Tripp's exceptional artistic talents.
