EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning vintage print captures the essence of Whitby, a charming coastal town in North Yorkshire. The LNER poster, created in 1935 by renowned artist William Lee-Hankey, was designed to promote rail travel to this picturesque destination. The focal point of the artwork is the magnificent Whitby Abbey, standing proudly atop the cliffs overlooking the sea. Its imposing silhouette against the sky evokes a sense of history and grandeur. In the foreground, we see local fishermen going about their daily routines on the harbourside. Their presence adds a touch of authenticity and showcases Whitby's strong maritime heritage. The composition beautifully portrays Whitby as a place where nature meets culture – from its churches and abbeys to its bustling sea coast resorts. Boats gently bobbing in the harbor serve as a reminder that this town has long been associated with fishing and seafaring traditions. Measuring at an impressive 1016 mm x 1270 mm, this print allows viewers to immerse themselves in every intricate detail captured by Lee-Hankey's skilled brushstrokes. It transports us back to an era when rail travel was not only practical but also romanticized as an adventure waiting to unfold. This image from National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection serves as both a historical artifact and a testament to Whitby's enduring allure for visitors seeking beauty, tranquility, and connection with nature amidst its rich cultural tapestry
