EDITORS COMMENTS
Be Budget Wise! Step into the past with this vintage BR poster from 1960, promoting budget tickets to London. Designed by an unknown artist, this eye-catching print was part of British Railways' campaign to entice passengers into the city for a day of shopping. The tickets were exclusively available on Wednesdays and Thursdays after 9.30 am, allowing travelers ample time to explore London's bustling markets and high street stores. The poster features a stylish woman wearing a pink hat, still adorned with its original tag. Her fashionable attire captures the essence of the era while conveying a sense of excitement and adventure. With her confident stance and alluring smile, she invites potential passengers to take advantage of these special offers. British Railways' Southern Region aimed to cater specifically to weekday shoppers looking for great deals in the capital city. Passengers who purchased these budget tickets had until 4.30 pm in the afternoon to depart London, ensuring they had plenty of time for retail therapy before heading back home. This artwork now resides in the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection as a testament to both British Railways' marketing ingenuity and the artistic talent behind it. It serves as a charming reminder that being budget-wise can also be stylish and fun.
