Framed Print of Because Ilford fire-women who are competing in a tug-o

Because Ilford fire-women who are competing in a tug-o -war tournament in Walthamstow on Whit Monday have no team with which to practise, they carry out their training on a piece of waste ground near their station with the aid of a Heath Robinson apparatus.
This novel device consists of a miscellaneous collection of articles, including a motor axle, dust bins and buckets filled with cement, which are suspended from scaffolding poles by means of ropes and pulleys.
When the girls start pulling, up go these improvised weights, borrowed from a neigbouring scrap
heap. A fireman who is interested in their training acts as an extra weight and as he shoots up gets an idea of the constistency of their heaves.
The team is representative of all branches of the National Fire Service (NFS) and equally varied were the professions of these girls in peacetime.
Ruth Wilkinson was a window cleaner, Holder Hunter a private secretary, Minnie Coblentz a book-keeper and Alice Doyle a statistical clerk.
