Col. J T C Moore-Brabazon (later Lord Brabazon of Tara) preparing to fly a Voisen-Farman I-bis 1910.
On 2nd May 1909 he became the first resident Englishman to complete a solo aeroplane flight in England at Leysdown, Isle of Sheppey; he flew 450ft in a Voisin biplane fitted with an 8-cylinder E.N.V engine.
He was also the first Englishman to hold a pilots licence when he was issued No.1 by the Royal Aero Club on 8 March 1910. He gave up practical flying in 1910 but continued to be closely involved with aviation until his death, aged 80, in 1964. © Mirrorpix
