Rust, that eternal enemy of motorists everywhere, wasn
Rust, that eternal enemy of motorists everywhere, wasn t the only thing Peter Nuttall had to contend with. He didn t know it, but his Volkswagen motor caravan looked suitable prey for woodworm. Mr Nuttall, from Cambridge, only discovered the shocking truth when put the vehicle into a garage for repairs. There, engineers discovered that whole steel sections of the subframe had been replaced by length of wood. Equally shocking, the Volkswagen, apparently in its bodged up condition, had recently been given an MOT by another garage. August 1972

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from August 1972, we witness the battle between motorists and their eternal nemesis: rust. But for Peter Nuttall, a resident of Cambridge, it wasn't just rust that posed a threat to his Volkswagen motor caravan. Little did he know that lurking beneath its surface was an unexpected enemy - woodworm. Unaware of the shocking truth, Mr. Nuttall took his beloved campervan to a garage for repairs. To everyone's astonishment, engineers discovered that sections of the subframe had been surreptitiously replaced with lengths of wood. It seemed as though someone had attempted to patch up the vehicle using unconventional materials. Equally alarming was the fact that this bodged-up Volkswagen had recently passed its MOT at another garage. How could such a significant issue go unnoticed? The discovery left both Mr. Nuttall and those involved in repairing his van dumbfounded. This intriguing snapshot captures not only the struggle against rust but also highlights the importance of thorough inspections when it comes to our cherished vehicles. It serves as a reminder that even seemingly harmless issues can have hidden consequences. Transported back to the 1970s through this image, we are reminded of how far automotive technology has come since then and how vital it is for motorists everywhere to remain vigilant against unforeseen adversaries like woodworm or any other potential threats lurking beneath our trusted wheels.
