Snow White has a secret. That raven black hair, demanded by the story

Snow White has a secret. That raven black hair, demanded by the story and perpetuated by the Disney cartoon film, is a wig. For Snow White, in reality Vivien Day, of Newry Park, Chester, a former Miss Chester, is a natural blonde. But children demand faithful portrayals in their pantomimes. So out came the wig for the show which, co-starring, Charles Hawtrey, opened at the Empire Theatre, Liverpool for three days. 25th April 1974

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we catch a glimpse of the enchanting Snow White, or rather Vivien Day from Newry Park, Chester. Behind the scenes of a pantomime production at the Empire Theatre in Liverpool back in 1974, we discover that Snow White's iconic raven black hair is nothing but an illusion. As demanded by both the original story and perpetuated by Disney's beloved cartoon film, Snow White's luscious locks are actually a wig. Vivien Day, a former Miss Chester and natural blonde in reality, understood the importance of faithfully portraying characters for children who hold these tales close to their hearts. And so she embraced her role as Snow White wholeheartedly - wig and all. Sharing the stage with renowned actor Charles Hawtrey, this non-seasonal pantomime delighted audiences for three magical days. The year was 1974; it was an era where entertainment took center stage and costumes transported us into fantastical worlds. This image captures not only a moment frozen in time but also reminds us of the power of storytelling and its ability to captivate generations across centuries. It serves as a testament to the dedication and commitment shown by performers like Vivien Day who bring beloved characters to life on stage while honoring our collective imagination.
