EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1970, we see Sally Jones, a nine-year-old girl from Bucks, proudly posing with her beloved horse named Warrior. Joining them is PC Tom Tucker, who played a significant role in an unprecedented event that year. For the first time since 1829, the Commissioner of Mounted Police relinquished his exclusive right to name horses purchased for Imber Court - the Metropolitan Police Mounted Branch Training Establishment. This historic moment was made possible through Thames Television's popular program "Magpie". The show's viewers were invited to suggest names for six recently acquired horses at Imber Court. Little did Sally know that her suggestion would be chosen and immortalized in this heartwarming photograph. The image captures not only Sally's infectious joy but also showcases the genuine bond between a young girl and her majestic equine companion. It serves as a reminder of the power of imagination and how it can bring about extraordinary opportunities even for children. Preserved by Alisdair Macdonald in Memory Lane Prints, this snapshot transports us back to a simpler time when innocence reigned supreme and television programs like "Magpie" brought communities together through shared experiences. This timeless piece evokes nostalgia while celebrating both childhood wonderment and unexpected triumphs.
