EDITORS COMMENTS
In this heartwarming print captured by Brendan Monks, we are transported back to the 1980s, a time when British former professional boxer Michael Watson was at the height of his career. The image showcases not only Watson's dedication and passion for boxing but also his deep love for family. Taken on the 24th of April in 1989, we see Watson standing proudly alongside his wife Zara and their two adorable children, Jamilla aged 2 and Lala aged just 1. As he holds them close, it is evident that despite being a fierce fighter in the ring, Watson's true strength lies within his role as a loving husband and father. Having competed from 1984 to 1991, Watson had an impressive record during those years. He held the Commonwealth middleweight title from 1989 to 1991 and even challenged three times for a world title between 1990 and 1991. This photograph captures him amidst this successful period of his career while reminding us that there is more to life than just sports achievements. Brendan Monks skillfully freezes this precious moment in time through his lens, allowing us to witness both sides of Michael Watson - the determined athlete who conquered opponents with skillful punches inside the ring and the devoted family man who found solace outside it.
