EDITORS COMMENTS
The towers of ICI Billingham stand tall and imposing, casting their shadow across the humble rooftops of St Hildas Estate. This photo print, taken on the 3rd of April 1991 by D. Jamieson, captures a moment frozen in time during the vibrant era of the 1990s. The image transports us back to an industrial landscape that defined Teesside's history. As we gaze upon this scene, we are reminded of the immense power and influence that industry held over Middlesbrough and its surrounding areas. These towering structures symbolize progress, innovation, and hard work - a testament to human ingenuity. The juxtaposition between the grandeur of ICI Billingham's towers and the modest homes nestled beneath them is strikingly poetic. It serves as a reminder that even amidst towering giants of industry, everyday life continues with its own rhythm. St Hildas Estate becomes more than just a collection of roofs; it represents resilience and community spirit in the face of industrial dominance. The people who called this place home were not overshadowed by these behemoths but rather found strength in their presence. This photograph encapsulates an era when Teesside was at its peak as an industrial powerhouse. It invites us to reflect on our past while contemplating how far we have come since then.
