EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic reunion of two legendary mountaineers, Sherpa Tensing and Sherpa Gombu. Taken at The Pen-y-Grwd Training base in Capel Curig, north Wales, this picture holds immense significance as it marks 20 years since the monumental 1953 Everest Climb. In May 1973, these courageous men gathered to commemorate their incredible achievement. Among the notable figures present at this reunion were Sitar Gombu and Lord Hunt, who played pivotal roles in the Everest expedition. However, one notable absence was Sir Edmund Hillary, unable to attend this momentous occasion. The image showcases Sherpa Tensing on the left side while Sherpa Gombu stands beside him. What makes this photograph even more remarkable is that Sherpa Gombu had accomplished an extraordinary feat by conquering Mount Everest not once but twice. Taken on May 26th, 1973 by Bob Rendle, this snapshot encapsulates the spirit of adventure and triumph over adversity that defined these brave climbers' lives. It serves as a testament to their indomitable willpower and unwavering determination. As we gaze upon this piece from Memory Lane Prints collection today, we are transported back to a time when human beings dared to defy gravity's limits and reach for new heights – both literally and metaphorically.
