Eleven-year-old Joanne Bamforth (front) as the ugly duckling

Eleven-year-old Joanne Bamforth (front) as the ugly duckling, surrounded by other youngsters from Outlane Methodist church Sunday school. The 29 children at the Sunday school - aged four to 14 - presented their version of three of the stories by Hans Christian Andersen. Mr Alan Firth, a church member and former Sunday school teacher, narrated the stories of the Ugly Duckling, the Emperors New Clothes and Thumbelina, which were acted out by the children. Sunday school teachers organised the show - the fifth to be presented by the
Sunday school. It took place after Outlane Methodist Churchs autumn fair and will be repeated tonight. 4th November 1985

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enchanting performance of "The Ugly Duckling" by eleven-year-old Joanne Bamforth and her fellow youngsters from Outlane Methodist Church Sunday school. In this heartwarming scene, Joanne stands at the forefront, portraying the titular character with grace and vulnerability. Surrounded by a group of talented children aged four to 14, their youthful energy radiates as they bring three beloved stories by Hans Christian Andersen to life. Under the guidance of Mr Alan Firth, a church member and former Sunday school teacher who narrated the tales, these young actors captivated their audience with their rendition of "The Ugly Duckling" "The Emperor's New Clothes" and "Thumbelina". The dedication and effort put forth by both students and teachers alike is evident in this remarkable production. Organized by devoted Sunday school teachers, this show marked a significant milestone for Outlane Methodist Church's Sunday school - it was their fifth presentation. Following the success of their autumn fair, this delightful performance took place on November 4th, 1985. Due to its popularity among attendees, an encore presentation was scheduled for that evening. This photograph not only immortalizes a momentous event in Outlane Methodist Church's history but also serves as a testament to the power of education through plays within religious communities during the vibrant era of the 1980s.
