It was like this...
Better than a text book... pupils at Honley Junior School used a very special teaching aid for their history project. They picked the brains of two women from the area to help with a national curriculum project on life in Britain from the 1930s. Mrs Norah Haigh (right) and Mrs Freda Matthews went to the school to answer questions on day-to-day life during their early years. Mrs Haigh is a former pupil at the school and the detectives of Class 3H have even found her name in the old school log book. Also for the project, the class have had a traditional 1930s wash-day and invented their own street. As a thank you to their guests, the youngsters sang, The Sunny Side Of The Street. 17th October 1991

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this heartwarming photo print, we are transported back to the 1990s at Honley Junior School, where pupils had a unique opportunity to delve into history beyond the confines of textbooks. Immersed in their national curriculum project on life in Britain from the 1930s, these eager learners sought guidance from two remarkable women from their local community. Mrs Norah Haigh and Mrs Freda Matthews graciously shared their memories and experiences of day-to-day life during their early years with the curious students. As an extra special connection, Mrs Haigh herself was once a pupil at Honley Junior School, leaving her mark in its old log book for future generations to discover. To bring history alive, Class 3H embarked on a traditional 1930s wash-day experience and even created their own imaginary street. The enthusiasm of these young detectives is evident as they engage with the past through hands-on activities. Expressing gratitude towards their esteemed guests, the children showcased their talents by serenading them with a heartfelt rendition of "The Sunny Side Of The Street". This gesture beautifully encapsulates the bond formed between different generations united by knowledge sharing and mutual respect. This snapshot captures not only a moment frozen in time but also exemplifies how education can be enriched when communities come together to bridge gaps between eras.
