EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print by Stephen Lock, we are transported back to the gritty streets of Cannon Street in East London during the 1980s. The image captures a man walking briskly past a row of dilapidated buildings, his shopping bag clutched tightly in hand. As he navigates through the desolate alleyway, broken windows and boarded up doorways serve as haunting reminders of the area's dereliction. The atmosphere is undeniably gloomy, with an air of poverty and decay hanging heavy in the air. These run-down slums paint a stark picture of urban life at its lowest point. Yet amidst such desolation, there is resilience evident on the face of this lone figure. His determined stride suggests that despite his surroundings, he refuses to succumb to despair. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of societal issues that plagued many neighborhoods during this era. Housing clearance efforts were underway, attempting to address these conditions and provide better living environments for residents trapped within these crumbling terraces. As we observe this scene frozen in time, it becomes clear that even amidst hardship and destitution, human spirit perseveres. This man symbolizes strength against adversity - an embodiment of hope amid a landscape marred by neglect. Stephen Lock's powerful composition invites us to reflect upon our shared history while urging us not to forget those who have endured hardships within forgotten corners like Cannon Street.
