Thugs spoil carnival fun. It was a day when black and white people were supposed to play

Thugs spoil carnival fun. It was a day when black and white people were supposed to play together. But, for the second year running, the Notting Hill Carnival, in West London, was spoiled by a gang of thugs who ran riot and ensured a bloody end to the celebrations on Monday (29-8-77). Running battles broke out in the streets as the rampaging youths pelted police with bricks, stones and bottles. Lines of officers, protected by riot shields, charged the bands of wreckers while terrified carnival-goers cowered behind walls to dodge the missiles. By the time the fury had died down, one policeman was seriously ill in hospital with stab wounds and another thirty were injured. The violence also claimed 108 victims among the revellers. It was a brief and shattering climax to a sunshine carnival that attracted 250, 000 people who had earlier danced in the streets to the drumming of steel bands. Entrancing: An enthralled youngester is hoisted shoulder-high to watch the fun of the Notting Hill Carnival. August 1977 P017332

EDITORS COMMENTS
Thugs Ruin Notting Hill Carnival: A Day of Unity Turned Violent". In this print from August 1977, we witness the aftermath of a once joyous celebration turned chaotic and bloody. The image captures the essence of the Notting Hill Carnival in West London, where black and white people were meant to come together in harmony. However, for the second consecutive year, this vibrant event was marred by a gang of thugs who unleashed havoc upon the streets. As lines of officers clad in riot shields clashed with rampaging youths armed with bricks, stones, and bottles, terrified carnival-goers sought refuge behind walls to avoid becoming targets. The atmosphere that had been filled with music and laughter quickly transformed into one of fear and chaos. The consequences were devastating. One brave policeman found himself seriously injured after being stabbed while attempting to restore order. Thirty other officers also suffered injuries during these running battles. Shockingly, among those attending the carnival as revelers or spectators alike, there were 108 victims affected by this senseless violence. This powerful photograph encapsulates both sides of humanity – on one hand an enthralled youngster hoisted shoulder-high to witness the festivities; on the other hand a community torn apart by mindless acts perpetrated by a few individuals. Despite this tragic climax overshadowing an otherwise sunny day filled with dance and drumming from steel bands that attracted over 250,000 people - it serves as a reminder that unity can be fragile if not protected against those who seek to sow division through violence.
