Framed Print of Malcolm Uphill of Caerphilly, who was to compete at the 500 Grand Prix at the Isle of Man

Malcolm Uphill of Caerphilly, who was to compete at the 500 Grand Prix at the Isle of Man. *A CAMPAIGN to commemorate one of Wales top motorbike racers is picking up pace in his hometown. Fundraising is well under way to buy and site a plaque in memory of Malcolm Uphill, pictured below, who was the first to achieve a 100mph lap at the Isle of Mann TT, where he went on to win in two successive years in 1969 and 1970. He was the first Welshman to win the junior and senior Manx Grand Prix events and also competed in the 250cc World Championship where he was compared to some of the worlds best riders. The latest campaign comes less than two weeks after pub giant JD Wetherspoon announced it was looking for Uphills relatives in the hope of naming its newest pub after him. Fans of the all-round sportsman, from Caerphilly, who also liked gliding and swimming, formed a committee two years ago with the intention of erecting a statue of Uphill in the town in his honour. 31st May 1966 -. © Mirrorpix
