Framed Prints From Memory Lane
Framed Print of Field Marshal Lord Plumer under the arch of the memorial to the 54
Field Marshal Lord Plumer under the arch of the memorial to the 54, 000 missing British and Commonwealth soldiers lost on the battlefield of the Ypres Salient. The memorial at Ypres is located at the eastern exit of the town and marks the starting point for one of the main roads out of the town that led Allied soldiers to the front line. The arch known as the Menin Gate was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield. Field Marshal Lord Plumer made light of why the memorial had been constructed and sited at Ypres during his speech at the dedication. It was resolved that here at Ypres, where so many of the missing are known to have fallen, there should be erected a memorial worthy of them which should give expression to the nations gratitude for their sacrifice and its sympathy with those who mourned them. A memorial has been erected which, in its simple grandeur, fulfils this object, and now it can be said of each one in whose honour we are assembled here today: he is not missing; he is here. At the end of the speech he pulled a rope and the flags covering a plaque below the sculpture of a British lion were revealed: To the armies of the British Empire who stood here from 1914 - 1918 and to those of their dead who have no known grave. 24th July 1927. © Mirrorpix
