EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 192 from the seminal work "Naturgeschichte der ausländischen Fische: mit sechs und dreissig Ausgemalten kupfern nach originalen" (Natural History of Foreign Fishes: With Sixteen and Thirty Copperplates after Originals), published between 1785 and 1795, features an intriguing illustration of two distinct species of bony fish, Zeus gallus and Zeus insidiator. This plate, produced by the renowned naturalist and artist Marcus Elieser Bloch, showcases the exquisite detail and accuracy that characterized the nineteenth century's burgeoning interest in the natural world. Zeus gallus, also known as the ponyfish or the dory, is depicted on the left side of the plate. This perciform fish, belonging to the family Zeidae, is characterized by its elongated body, large pectoral fins, and distinctive black spots. The name "ponyfish" derives from its horse-like head shape, while "dory" refers to its use as food. On the right side of the plate, we find Zeus insidiator, or the scorpionfish, a member of the Scorpaenidae family within the order Scorpaeniformes. This stealthy predator is known for its venomous spines and camouflaging abilities. Its name translates to "deceiver" or "insidious one," reflecting its ability to blend in with its surroundings and ambush unsuspecting prey. Bloch's illustration of these two fascinating fish species not only showcases their unique physical characteristics but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of the time. The meticulous attention to detail and the high-quality copperplate engravings make this plate an essential addition to any collection of historical natural history records.
