EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative WW2 poster from the early 1940s, titled "In an Air Raid, What Motorists Must Do," offers essential guidance for motorists during air raids, both during the day and at night. The image depicts a determined driver behind the wheel of a car, with the ominous backdrop of a city under attack from the sky. During daytime raids, the instructions read, motorists were advised to park their vehicles as far away from buildings as possible, preferably under cover, and to keep their engines switched off. They were also urged to avoid using headlights, as the bright lights could attract enemy attention and potentially guide bombs to their targets. At night, motorists were instructed to keep their headlights on low beam, with white lights at the front and red lights at the rear, to ensure they could navigate the darkened streets safely. They were also advised to avoid using side or interior lights, as these could also attract unwanted attention. The poster's stark, graphic design, with its bold use of pink, black, and white, underscores the urgency and importance of these instructions. The image of a car parked under the shadow of a bombed-out building serves as a reminder of the realities of wartime life and the need for vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines. This WW2 Civil Defence poster is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and challenges faced by civilians during the war, and the importance of following safety instructions to protect life and property. It is a valuable historical document that offers a glimpse into the daily life and experiences of people during this pivotal period in world history.
