EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image showcases the cover of a small, yet significant booklet published by the Higbee Company during the tumultuous year of 1917. The First World War had reached its third year, and the devastating impact of the conflict on soldiers at the front was felt deeply by women and families back home. In response, the Higbee Company, like many other organizations, recognized the power of handmade comforts to bring solace and warmth to the troops. The title of the booklet, "The Knitting Needle has again come into its own," underscores the resurgence of knitting as a vital wartime activity. The front cover features an array of patterns for knitted comforts, including socks, mittens, scarves, and balaclavas. The intricate designs, rendered in black and white, are both practical and beautiful, reflecting the dedication and creativity of the women who would make these items. The Higbee Company's booklet is a testament to the important role women played during the First World War. As the war disrupted traditional gender roles, women stepped up to support the war effort in various ways, including knitting comforts for soldiers. This humble craft, once considered a feminine pastime, became a powerful symbol of support and solidarity. The knitted comforts, made from wool and other materials, provided both physical and emotional sustenance for the soldiers on the front lines. The act of knitting itself offered a sense of purpose and connection to the war effort for the women who made them. This booklet, with its carefully curated patterns, served as a guide for women to create these comforts and contribute to the war effort in their own way. As we look at this cover, we are reminded of the resilience and resourcefulness of the human spirit during times of crisis. The Higbee Company's booklet is a poignant reminder of the power of handmade items to bring comfort and connection, even in the most challenging of circumstances.
