EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate print depicts two distinct species of wrens, the European Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes) and the Common Wren or Zitting Cisticola (Motacilla troglodites), drawn and engraved by the renowned British naturalist and artist, George Graves. The print is taken from Graves' seminal work, "British Ornithology," published in Walworth in 1821. Graves was a polymath, excelling in various fields such as bookselling, publishing, art, and engraving. His meticulous attention to detail is evident in this stunning representation of these small, intricately patterned birds. The European Wren, native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa, is depicted on the left, its plumage a rich, earthy brown with distinctive white underparts and a long, thin bill. The Common Wren, found in Africa and parts of Asia, is shown on the right, its plumage a warm, olive-brown with a white underbelly and a shorter, thicker bill. Both species are renowned for their distinctive, melodic songs and agile movements. Graves' work was groundbreaking in its time, providing an accurate and detailed record of the natural world. This print is a testament to his dedication and skill, offering a glimpse into the past and a reminder of the beauty and diversity of the avian world.
