EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of traditional Tunisian women's attire and ornamentation, showcasing a woman adorned with an intricately designed coin necklace, metal bangles, and a pointed hat. The necklace, made of numerous strings of coins with holes in the middle, is a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Tunisia. The coins, worn not only as jewelry but also as a symbol of wealth and status, add an air of antiquity to the image. The woman's thin, silken clothing draped elegantly over her hips complements the heavy metal jewelry, creating a striking contrast. The pointed hat, a common accessory in North African cultures, completes the ensemble, adding a touch of mystique and allure. This photograph, taken in 1917, offers a glimpse into the past and provides insight into the ornamentation and fashion of Tunisian women during that era. The intricate details of the jewelry, the delicate fabric of the clothing, and the proud posture of the woman all contribute to the timeless beauty of this image. The use of metal bangles and strings of coins with holes in the middle is a common theme in African jewelry and can be traced back to ancient civilizations such as the Carthaginians and Romans, who occupied Tunisia at various points in history. The intricate design and historical significance of this necklace make it a prized possession and a symbol of Tunisian heritage.
