EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving depicts the Tufted Ape, scientifically known as Mandrillus sphinx, also referred to as the Mandrill. This magnificent primate is native to the forests of Central and West Africa. The Tufted Ape is the largest species of Old World monkey and is easily recognizable by the distinctive, colorful facial markings that resemble a mask. The male's face is adorned with bright red and blue patches, while the female's face is less colorful, with a more subdued coloration. The Tufted Ape is a social animal, living in groups of up to 50 individuals. They are omnivorous, feeding on fruits, leaves, buds, flowers, and insects. They are also known to eat clay, which is believed to help them digest the toxins found in some of the leaves they consume. This illustration is taken from The Naturalist's Pocket Magazine; or, Complete Cabinet of the Curiosities and Beauties of Nature, published by Harrison in London between 1798 and 1802. The Naturalist's Pocket Magazine was a popular natural history publication of the time, featuring a wide range of illustrations of plants, animals, and minerals. This particular plate was engraved by an unknown artist and handcolored by an expert colorist, resulting in a stunning and detailed representation of the Tufted Ape. The Tufted Ape, also known as the Mandrill or Tufted Monkey, is a fascinating and beautiful creature that continues to captivate people around the world with its unique appearance and intriguing behavior. This illustration is a testament to the natural history artistry of the past and serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity of our planet.
