EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, depicts two intriguing marine species: the Striped Threadfin, Polydactylus plebeius, and the Bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix. The illustration is a masterpiece of natural history, created by the skilled hands of Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Striped Threadfin, also known as the Five-fingered Threadfin or the Five-fingered Blenny, is a small, elongated fish with distinctive vertical stripes. Its scientific name, Polydactylus plebeius, refers to its five webbed fins, which are visible in this detailed engraving. The Threadfin is a bottom-dwelling fish, commonly found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The Bluefish, or Pomatomus saltatrix, is a powerful, migratory fish known for its vibrant blue coloration. This fish is an important food source for humans and is also a popular game fish. The Bluefish is a pelagic fish, meaning it lives in the open ocean, and is found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The engraving, illustrated by J.G. Pretre and engraved by Massard under the direction of Turpin, is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and accuracy that characterized natural history illustrations of the time. The handcoloring adds another layer of beauty and realism to the already impressive engraving, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical marine life illustrations.
