EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical illustration from Mary Evans Prints Online showcases a proposed solution to London's car-garaging problem - a skyscraper park designed by Eugene G. Higgins. The cross-section of this multi-storey garage, resembling a tower, could hold up to seven hundred cars in densely populated areas like New York and London. In the bustling cities of the early 20th century, parking was becoming an increasingly pressing issue as more and more people owned automobiles. Higgins' innovative design aimed to address this challenge by providing a vertical solution for car storage. The intricate details of the illustration highlight the thoughtfulness put into every aspect of the design - from the layout of each level to ensure maximum capacity to the structural integrity required for such a towering structure. While this particular concept may not have come to fruition, it serves as a reminder of past attempts at finding creative solutions to urban problems. As cities continue to grow and evolve, it is important to look back on historical proposals like Higgins' skyscraper park for inspiration on how we can better manage our modern-day challenges.
