EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Silvertown Fire Station in London, as it stood in its final days before closure in 2009. Located in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the fire station at 11 Silvertown Way was a vital part of the local community and the London Fire Brigade's network for over 70 years. Built in 1938, the Silvertown Fire Station was one of the most modern and well-equipped in the brigade when it opened. Its distinctive red brick façade and Art Deco design were a testament to the forward-thinking approach of the time. Over the decades, the station's firefighters responded to countless emergencies, from house fires and road accidents to industrial incidents and major disasters. However, by the late 2000s, the London Fire Brigade was facing significant budget cuts, and the Silvertown Fire Station was identified as surplus to requirements. Despite a campaign by local residents and firefighters to save the station, it was eventually closed in 2009. The building was later demolished, and the site is now home to a new housing development. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the history and heritage of the Silvertown Fire Station and the important role it played in the lives of the local community and the London Fire Brigade. The fire engine and firefighters standing outside the station in this image are a testament to the dedication and bravery of those who served there, and the vital work they did to keep the people of Silvertown safe.
