1. Title: The Second Goetheanum Takes Shape: A Modern Expressionist Masterpiece Rises in Dornach, Switzerland (1920s) 2.. The Second Goetheanum under construction at Dornach, near Basle, Switzerland, in the 1920s, stands as a testament to human creativity, resilience, and the power of the human spirit. This iconic building, now the world centre for the anthroposophical movement, was born from the ashes of its predecessor, which was tragically destroyed by fire on New Year's Eve 1922-1923. The Second Goetheanum, designed by Swiss architects Paul and Theodor Schmiedeberg, was completed in 1928, and it is a remarkable example of modern expressionist architecture. The building is entirely made of cast concrete, a material that was still relatively new and innovative at the time. Its unique design, characterized by bold, organic forms and intricate details, reflects the principles of anthroposophy, a spiritual philosophy founded by philosopher Rudolf Steiner. As seen in this image, the construction process was well underway, with scaffolding erected around the building and workers diligently laying concrete. The Second Goetheanum was not only a symbol of hope and renewal for the anthroposophical movement but also a groundbreaking architectural achievement that continues to inspire and captivate visitors from around the world. This photograph, taken in the 1920s, offers a glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the historical significance of this architectural marvel and the visionary spirit that brought it to life. The Second Goetheanum stands as a reminder of the enduring power of human creativity and the transformative potential of spiritual and artistic expression.
