EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 185: Scorpaena antennata, or the Broadbarred Firefish (Pterois antennata), is depicted in this exquisite 19th century illustration from "Naturgeschichte der ausländischen Fische" (Natural History of Foreign Fishes) by Marcus Elieser Bloch. This remarkable work, published between 1785 and 1795, showcases 60 copperplate engravings of various fish species, meticulously rendered from original specimens. The Broadbarred Firefish, also known as the Spottedfin Lionfish or the Scorpaena antennata, is a striking member of the Scorpaenidae family, order Scorpaeniformes, and class Actinopterygii. Native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans, this bony fish is characterized by its vibrant coloration, featuring broad, vertical bars and contrasting spots. The firefish derives its name from its venomous spines, which it uses for defense against predators. Marcus Elieser Bloch (1732-1801) was a renowned German naturalist, zoologist, and illustrator. His extensive work on fish taxonomy and systematics laid the foundation for the modern classification of these creatures. This illustration, produced during the height of the Enlightenment, is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that characterized the natural history research of the time. The Broadbarred Firefish continues to fascinate marine biologists and enthusiasts alike for its unique appearance and intriguing adaptations. This image, preserved from the past, offers a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of the ocean and the remarkable achievements of early natural history research.
