EDITORS COMMENTS
The Sacrifice of Isaac, a captivating polychrome sculpture by Alonso Berruguete, dates back to the Renaissance period between 1527 and 1532. This masterpiece is a part of the Altarpiece of San Benito el Real, located in Valladolid, Spain, in the Castile and Leon region. The sculpture, carved on wood, showcases the biblical story of Abraham and Isaac, an iconic tale from the Old Testament. In this scene, Abraham, with a determined expression, holds a knife ready to sacrifice his beloved son, Isaac. The young Isaac, bound and calm, gazes up at the heavens, demonstrating his unwavering faith in God's plan. The round, free-standing figures convey a sense of depth and realism, characteristic of the Mannerist style that emerged during the early modern era. The Sacrifice of Isaac is a poignant representation of the unyielding faith and obedience of Abraham, a central figure in Christianism and an essential part of the Judeo-Christian tradition. The intricate details and lifelike expressions of the figures capture the essence of the narrative, making it a significant work of art from the Western history of art, particularly during the 1480-1561 period. This magnificent sculpture is now preserved and displayed at the National Museum of Sculpture in Valladolid, Spain, where it continues to captivate visitors and art enthusiasts alike with its intricate details, historical significance, and artistic mastery.
