EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from the archives, Queen Victoria (1819-1901) extends her warm congratulations to Princess May of Teck (later the Duchess of York, then Queen Mary, 1867-1953) on her wedding day to Prince George, the future King George V, on the 6th of July 1893. The poignant scene unfolds at Windsor Castle, where the young couple exchanged vows in the presence of their royal family and esteemed guests. Princess May's journey to the altar was not an easy one. She had previously been engaged to another of Queen Victoria's grandsons, Albert Victor, but his sudden and tragic death from pneumonia left her heartbroken. Following a period of mourning, May found solace in a newfound love for Prince George, and with the blessing of her late fiancé's mother, Queen Victoria, the couple embarked on a new chapter in their lives. The image captures a tender moment between the two women, as the elderly monarch bestows her blessing upon her granddaughter-in-law. The air of reverence and affection is palpable, as the Queen's loving gaze meets the radiant smile of the newlywed Princess. The scene is a testament to the enduring strength and resilience of the British monarchy, as well as the poignant and timeless bond between a grandmother and her granddaughter. This historic photograph, taken from the extensive collection at Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a unique glimpse into the rich tapestry of royal history, and serves as a poignant reminder of the love, loss, and renewal that often accompany the most significant moments in our lives.
