EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph from the Illustrated London News archives captures a momentous occasion in British royal history: the presentation of wedding gifts to Princess Alexandra of Denmark (1844-1925) as she prepared for her marriage to Prince Edward, later King Edward VII, in 1863. The exquisite array of jewels, showcased in this image, were carefully selected and crafted by esteemed British jewellers Garrard, with the exception of the bracelet on the bottom left, which was a gracious gift from the ladies of Manchester and was created by Hunt and Roskell. The stunning jewellery included a magnificent diamond necklace, a pearl and diamond brooch, and a captivating tiara adorned with diamonds and pearls. The future Queen's bridal attire was further enhanced by the elegant diamond diadem, which would later become a cherished part of the British royal jewellery collection. Princess Alexandra's marriage to Prince Edward, the Prince of Wales, took place on March 10, 1863, at St. James's Palace in London. The union between the Danish princess and the future monarch marked the beginning of a new chapter in British royalty, and the presentation of these beautiful and thoughtful gifts served as a testament to the love and admiration bestowed upon the young couple. This evocative image, taken in the 1860s, offers a glimpse into the grandeur and splendour of a royal wedding and the enduring allure of the jewels that have become synonymous with the British monarchy.
