EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Sir Stanley Hooker (1907-1996) and Sir George Edwards (1902-1984) are seen deep in conversation at 4 Hamilton Place in London. Both men were pioneers in the field of aviation, making significant contributions to the development of aircraft technology in the mid-20th century. Sir Stanley Hooker was a renowned British aeronautical engineer, best known for his work on the de Havilland Comet, the world's first jet-powered passenger airliner. Hooker joined de Havilland in 1934 and played a crucial role in the design and development of the Comet, which made its first test flight in 1949. The Comet's innovative features, including its swept-wing design and pressurized cabin, revolutionized air travel and set new standards for comfort and safety. Sir George Edwards, on the other hand, was a visionary leader in the British aviation industry. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1921 and went on to serve as the Chief Scientific Advisor to the Ministry of Supply during World War II. After the war, Edwards played a key role in the establishment of the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), which was instrumental in funding and developing new technologies, including jet engines and guided missiles. Edwards also served as the Chairman and Chief Executive of the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) from 1957 to 1967, during which time he oversaw the development of several groundbreaking aircraft, including the VC10 and the TSR-2. The photograph of Sir Stanley Hooker and Sir George Edwards captures a moment of collaboration and innovation in the history of aviation. The two men's shared passion for aircraft technology and their vision for the future of air travel are evident in their animated conversation. The photograph is a testament to the pioneering spirit of the men who shaped the skies and opened up new possibilities for travel and exploration.
